In this 90-minute talk, Professor Keith Gaynor will explore the connections between trauma, shame, attachment, and dissociation in the development of psychosis. Drawing on a growing body of research including his own, he will examine how early adverse experiences, particularly attachment disruptions and experiences of shame, may predispose individuals to pathological dissociation, which may eventually manifest as psychosis. He will present theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence supporting the view that trauma-related dissociation serves as a pathway through which psychotic symptoms emerge, highlighting the importance trauma-informed care in psychosis early prevention and treatment. Last but not least, the talk will cover innovative ideas on how to incorporate an attachment focus into trauma-focused psychotherapy using EMDR.
Speaker: Dr. Keith Gaynor is an Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology at the School of Psychology of Universitry College Dublin. He is also a Senior Clinical Psychologist in DETECT, Early Intervention in Psychosis Services. With over 20 years of experience in the field, Dr. Gaynor has focused his research on psychosis and early intervention in adolescent mental health. He is the principal investigator of POPlab UCD (the Psychology of Psychosis research lab) and has published extensively on psychological approaches to psychosis.
